NEW YORK – One person was killed and another was seriously injured Thursday when a small plane crashed onto I-684 in Westchester County, New York, authorities said.
According to the FAA, at least two people were onboard the single-engine Tecnam P-2008 when it crashed near Exit 2 in Harrison around 7:15 p.m after the pilot reported engine troubles.
The crash site was a few miles south of Westchester County Airport in White Plains.
According to the New York State Police, I-684 is closed in both directions, with detours in place.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area as the closure is expected to be significant during the investigation.
“The crash also caused an aviation gas spill, which DEC is working rapidly to contain and clean up,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “My heart goes out to the loved ones of those on board during this tragic incident, and I am praying for a safe recovery for the injured individual.”
The FAA is expected to release a report on the crash Friday.
