Texas put Michigan in an early hole during Saturday’s pivotal out-of-conference game.
The Longhorns led 14-3 in the second quarter against the defending national champions when Andrew Mukuba intercepted Wolverines quarterback Davis Warren.
Texas defensive back Malik Muhammad deflected the Warren pass intended for wideout Tyler Morris, and Mukuba came away with the interception.
The Longhorns scored a field goal on the ensuing drive to extend their lead to 14.
Texas dominated the first half, out-gaining Michigan 279-88. It added a touchdown late in the second quarter following a fumble by Wolverines tight end Colston Loveland to enter the half leading 24-3.
With or without the Wolverines’ miscues, the Longhorns were the better team through the first 30 minutes.
It was an early statement for Texas (1-0), ranked No. 3 in the latest Associated Press rankings, over No. 10 Michigan (1-0) in the season’s first game between two top-10 teams.
