The Philadelphia Flyers announced Friday that forward Matvei Michkov won October’s NHL Rookie of the Month.
In 11 games, Michkov has four goals and five assists for nine points. He leads all rookies in goals and is tied for the most points.
Michkov was the Flyers’ seventh overall pick in the 2023 Draft and has already shown he’s the real deal. Out of all the rookies in the league, he leads in power-play goals with three and power-play points with six. He is also tied for the most multi-point games with three, second in time-on-ice at 18:26, third in shots on net with 20, and fourth in points per game at 0.82.
Michkov made his NHL debut on Oct. 11 against the Vancouver Canucks. He would tally his first point on Oct. 12 against the Calgary Flames and score his first goal on Oct. 15 against the Edmonton Oilers.
Before joining the Flyers in the offseason, Michkov spent most of last season playing for HC Sochi of the KHL. He tallied 19 goals and 22 assists for 41 points in 47 games.
He would play for SKA St. Petersburg beforehand but only appeared in one game. Michkov would then be loaned to HC Sochi for the 2023 season.
Michkov led HC Sochi in goals with 19, ranked second in overall points with 41, and was third on the team in assists with 22. During the 2023 season, he had 11 multi-point games, including three three-point games and five separate three-game point streaks, including one four-game point streak, as an under-20-year-old player.
