The New York Giants spent the bye week evaluating their quarterback situation, and they have decided to make a change.
Daniel Jones has been benched for Week 12 and likely beyond, according to multiple reports. Tommy DeVito will start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
The Giants are 2-8 with Jones as their starting quarterback this season. Jones was 22-of-37 for 190 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in New York’s 20-17 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 10. Head coach Brian Daboll seemed to throw Jones under the bus during an interview after the first quarter of that game.
Daboll then refused to commit to Jones as the Giants starter heading into the bye week, which was a big change after the way the coach repeatedly threw his support behind Jones during the first half of the season.
The Giants still owe Jones the remainder of the $35.5 million guaranteed salary for this season. Now that they are all but eliminated from postseason contention, they have a serious financial incentive to have Jones ride the bench for the remainder of the year.
Jones has completed 63.3 percent of his passes this season for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. If he has played his last snap for the Giants, the former first-round pick will finish with a record of 22-36-1 as the team’s starter.
