Despite some recent buzz about quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future, the New York Jets aren’t shutting him down for the rest of the season.
On Saturday, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported the Jets were considering placing Rodgers on injured reserve or benching him “over the next few weeks.” However, in his Monday news conference, Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said he would “absolutely” start when they host the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13.
“All I can say — and you’d have to ask Aaron if he’s fully healthy — but he’s better off today than he has been of late,” Ulbrich said, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “So he’s definitely feeling healthier than he has probably been for the past month. And a healthy Aaron Rodgers is an Aaron Rodgers we all love. So I’m excited about what that looks like.”
On Sunday, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Rodgers has battled hamstring, knee and ankle issues throughout the season and was “resisting” medical scans. Ulbrich said that claim is “news to me.”
While the Jets are rolling with Rodgers for now, that doesn’t mean he’ll start for them in 2025.
Rodgers turns 41 on Dec. 2 and hasn’t looked like a four-time MVP this season. The former Green Bay Packers star ranks 27th in the league in completion percentage (63.4%), 24th in QBR (51.4) and 15th in passing yards (2,442) through 11 starts.
The Jets (3-8) are third in the AFC East and will likely miss the playoffs for a 14th consecutive season.
Cimini shared that an anonymous source would be “shocked” if Jets owner Woody Johnson lets Rodgers return to the club next season.
Rodgers may not want to play for the Jets, either. After firing HC Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, the club seems to be in disarray.
Although the Jets aren’t benching him, Rodgers’ future with the organization still seems murky.
