The New York Giants are making yet another change under center as it enters Week 15.
Third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito will make the start against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday after head coach Brian Daboll told reporters (h/t ESPN’s Adam Schefter) that backup Drew Lock is in a walking boot.
Lock reportedly suffered a heel injury during the team’s 14-11 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 14 and did not practice Wednesday.
The update was a sudden reversal of Daboll’s position on Monday when he told reporters Lock would start against the Ravens.
“Drew will be our quarterback this week,” Daboll said. “Unless he can’t be based on injury.”
Lock’s condition must have worsened over the last 48 hours to require a boot, but it’s another setback the franchise has had to endure this season.
If DeVito does start Sunday, it will be the third quarterback change the team has made since the start of the year.
It released sixth-year starter Daniel Jones in November after the controversial handling of his benching during the bye week, and shortly after that, DeVito was benched for Lock.
At 2-11, New York’s fanbase is becoming increasingly frustrated by the team’s lack of success despite the prospect of a top draft pick in April.
Unknown fans purchased the services of a plane ahead of the game against the Saints to fly a banner over MetLife Stadium, asking team owner John Mara to fix the “dumpster fire” the team has become.
DeVito won three games as a starter in 2023 in place of an injured Jones, but that magic seems to have evaporated, throwing for only 189 yards and recording a 16.0 QBR in one start this year.
He’ll have his hands full on Sunday as the Giants enter the contest as 14.5-point underdogs at home, the most significant spread in the franchise’s history since 1966.
