San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama is no stranger to making NBA history. Just 94 games into his NBA career, the 20-year-old French star has already etched his name in the history books on numerous occasions.
Take for example, on Saturday night, when Wembanyama became the only player in league history to record 10 blocks and four three-pointers in the same game.
The rare feat wasn’t the only historic milestone reached by Wembanyama in December, either.
Per San Antonio Spurs PR specialist Jordan Howenstine, Wembanyama made his 200th career three-pointer on Saturday night, reaching that mark faster than Stephen Curry (who did so in 99 career games), James Harden (153 career games) and Ray Allen (131 career games). Curry, Harden and Allen currently top the list of the most three-pointers made in NBA history.
Many projected the No. 1 pick of the 2023 NBA Draft to blossom into a star, but not even the most bullish scout could have imagined that he would be on pace to become one of the best three-point shooters in league history.
While the three-point happy nature of the modern NBA is partially responsible for Wembanyama’s absurd pace, the efficiency of the French center shouldn’t be overlooked.
After hitting just under 33% of his triples during his historic rookie season, Wembanyama is shooting 35% from deep this season while averaging 9.1 three-point attempts per game. Should he continue launching from deep, the budding Spurs star could quickly rise up the all-time three-pointers list.
Defensively, the French star accomplished something even more astonishing. Despite playing less than 100 career games so far, Wembanyama has already recorded more career blocks than 91.1% of all players in NBA history, per StatMamba.
If that stat sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is. To surpass 90% of the league in any statistical category is remarkable, but to do so in one’s sophomore season is downright mind-boggling.
So far this season, Wembanyama is averaging 3.8 blocks per game, which would finish as the 25th-most in a single-season in NBA history. His impressive play on both ends of the floor has been a joy to watch and could result in his first All-Star selection in February.
Still less than 100 games into his NBA career, the sky’s the limit for the talented rim-protector and he is almost certainly not done adding his name to the history books.
