Reports have now confirmed that Chelsea have opted to recall Trevoh Chalobah who is currently on loan to Crystal Palace as the injury concerns of the club worsen.
Chelsea have exercised their option to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan stint at Crystal Palace, bringing him back to Stamford Bridge with immediate effect as the Blues have continued to struggle with injury woes.
This move rules Chalobah out of Palace’s Premier League clash with Leicester City tonight. The decision to activate his recall clause stems from Chelsea’s ongoing defensive injury problems, with Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana both sidelined.
Fofana, in particular, is expected to be out for the rest of the season, continuing a frustrating injury run since joining the club. Additionally, uncertainty surrounds Axel Disasi’s future, as the French defender is reportedly considering a departure from Chelsea.
Manager Enzo Maresca was forced to field 18-year-old Josh Acheampong alongside Levi Colwill in the recent 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, highlighting the depth issues in Chelsea’s backline. Chalobah’s return represents a significant turnaround for the 25-year-old, who was left out of Chelsea’s summer plans and omitted from their pre-season tour of the United States after being told he was not in Maresca’s vision for the team.
However, Chalobah has impressed during his loan spell at Palace and is expected to play a key role for Chelsea in the second half of the season. Despite a promising start, Chelsea’s form has dipped, and they are winless in their last five Premier League matches. A Newcastle victory over Wolves on Wednesday could see the Blues fall out of the Champions League positions.
Crystal Palace may now be prompted to seek a replacement centre-back before the January transfer window closes to compensate for Chalobah’s departure.
