Daniel Chapo has been inaugurated as Mozambique’s president despite widespread controversy over disputed election results. Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who recently returned from exile, vowed daily protests for Chapo’s entire term if need be. He accused the government of suppressing peace, adding that members of his team were shot with live ammunition during demonstrations last week. The protests, which began after the election results were announced last October, have led to over 300 deaths, according to the electoral monitoring group Plataforma DECIDE. International observers, including the EU mission to the country, noted that the election was marred by irregularities such as the alteration of results. Based on these reports, some civil society groups petitioned the African Union to withhold recognition of Chapo’s presidency. However, some African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, attended the inauguration.
