Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent

That is the week of Ash Wednesday, a solemn day of fasting and reflection that alerts the beginning of Lent, essentially the most penitential season of the church calendar for Catholics and lots of different Christians.

On Ash Wednesday, many Christians go to church for a service that emphasizes the beginning of a season of reflection, self-denial and repentance from sin.

Worshippers obtain ashes, generally imposed within the form of a cross on the brow. The officiant usually says, “Keep in mind that you’re mud, and to mud you shall return,” a stark reminder that demise is a part of life and that one ought to deal with issues of the spirit. Or the officiant says, “Repent and imagine within the Gospel.”
