Rep. Mike Lawler is the projected winner of New York’s 17th congressional district, NBC News projects, an area where the balance of political power has switched back and forth in recent elections. Lawler had been in a tough campaign against Mondaire Jones, a former Democratic congressman who was one of the first two openly gay Black men to serve in the House when he was elected in 2020. Jones lost his seat when the boundaries of his district were redrawn. Both candidates had geared their strategies toward attracting moderate voters, while criticizing each other as being in league with radicals.…

University of Exeter Mosquito larvae grow faster if they’re exposed to particular bacteria, according to a new study that could help global health programmes. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes spread illnesses including dengue, yellow fever and Zika. Anti-disease programmes breed and release non-biting male mosquitoes that are either sterile or prevent transmission of diseases. These mass release programmes can be substantially more effective than the widespread spraying of insecticides, as these insects have developed resistance to many commonly employed chemicals. The new study, by the universities of Exeter and Wageningen, examined how Asaia bacteria affects the development of mosquito larvae. The results show that Asaia accelerated development…

Phoenix, Arizona – For nearly three decades, Buster Johnson served with little fanfare as a member of the Board of Supervisors in Mohave County, a deep-red section of western Arizona. Even as former President Donald Trump pushed the false claim that widespread fraud was to blame for his loss in the 2020 election, the idea that such malfeasance had taken place in Mohave seemed laughable: Trump had carried the county by more than 50 points. But that did little to stop the rise of election denialism in Mohave Country — and in the Republican Party at large. Johnson, a lifelong…

By Terry Barringer From the title and publisher’s blurb I was expecting something like A History of the World in 100 Dishes, preferably with recipes. Footnote 7 on pp. 294-5, for example is particularly informative on the history and taste of and attitudes to eating dogs.) These ‘tummy chronicles’ (p. xiv) abound in descriptions of food ranging from the mouth-watering to the stomach churning. The author is Swedish by birth, Indian by adoption…
