The normally hushed and reverent surroundings of Tate Britain on Millbank will host the Big Weekender on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 August. The two-day free event has been inspired by Alvaro Barrington’s installation, Grace, a “personal exploration of identity and belonging” in the Duveen Galleries.
Saturday’s Family Day family-oriented activities begin at 11am with art, dance, music, mas-making and an appearance by members of Kinetika Bloco’s Junior Summer School. At 4pm, visitors are promised a Block Party, with music and workshops inside and outside the galleries, including sound systems and food trucks, which continues until 10pm.
The Sunday Social has a more relaxed vibe, with music from Mangrove Steelband and Saxon Sound System, more food trucks and “a chance to soak in the carnival atmosphere”. For more information, go to Tate.org.uk.
