Liverpool’s forward player, Darwin Nunez has been issued a five-match suspension following the incident with spectators after his national team Uruguay were beaten by Colombia in the 2024 Copa America.
The suspension was issued to the Uruguayan by the body governing football in South America, CONMEBOL. In the incident, Darwin Nunez was seen confronting the Colombia fans in the stands after the final whistle in the semi-final of the competition in July 2024.
The statement confirmed that five players have been banned, including Nunez, while, 11 others were fined for their part in the altercation, Nunez received a fine of £15,145 ($20,000) in addition to the suspension.
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, 27, has received a four-game ban. Napoli defender Mathias Olivera, 26, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, 25, and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez, 29, have all received three-game bans.
The ban to these players is a big blow to Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa, the former Leeds United manager, whose side are involved in several qualifying matches in September and October for the 2026 World Cup.

The incident broke out in a section of the stadium where many family members of the Uruguay players were seated. Nunez had climbed railings and made his way into the crowded stand to protect his family.
