Ethiopia is evacuating thousands from the Afar region due to potential volcanic activity at Mount Dofen, which has shown steam eruptions since Thursday, January 2. The long-dormant volcano’s activity has caused significant damage, including volcanic mudflows that cracked major roads and destroyed properties. The evacuations, described as precautionary, aim to safeguard residents by relocating them to safer areas. Despite fears of an eruption, geophysics expert Atalay Ayele noted that steam activity does not guarantee a full-scale eruption. Afar, known for its harsh climate and seismic activity, has a history of volcanic eruptions, droughts, and floods, which have repeatedly displaced communities. The ongoing evacuation highlights the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters and the need for proactive measures to protect affected populations.
