Off to a dreadful 2-5 start, the New York Giants are already on the verge of another lost season, and change will undoubtedly come if they cannot steady the ship. For now, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are seemingly safe, but the same can’t be said for quarterback Daniel Jones.
On Wednesday, Giants owner John Mara threw his support behind Daboll and Schoen. However, Jones’ name was conspicuously absent from the conversation.
“John Mara would not discuss Daniel Jones. Focused on Daboll and Schoen,” Judy Battista of NFL Network posted on X.
Mara may have chosen to stay quiet about Jones because he didn’t want to step on Daboll and Schoen’s toes. Ultimately, though, he’s the man who signs the checks, and if he had confidence in the QB having a future with the Giants beyond this season, Wednesday was the perfect opportunity to do so.
Jones has struggled this season, ranking 26th in passer rating (80.6) and 19th in passing yards per game (206). Meanwhile, he was benched during the Giants’ 28-3 Week 7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles after throwing for only 99 yards (14-of-21) through three-plus quarters of football.
Daboll sat Jones late “to create a spark,” claiming he’d be back as the starter in Week 8 at the Pittsburgh Steelers. But he’s clearly unhappy with the direction of the Giants offense and its QB, as proven by the short leash shown against the Eagles.
According to Battista, Mara said he’s still committed to Daboll and Schoen, adding that he’s confident and willing to show patience with the pair. However, he didn’t offer Jones the same support, which hints that the Giants could be looking in a new direction at QB sooner rather than later.
