New York Giants running back Devin Singletary could have scored a rushing touchdown with slightly over two minutes to play in regulation of this past Sunday’s game at the Cleveland Browns but instead stopped short of the end zone so quarterback Daniel Jones could run the clock out after the two-minute warning.
Singletary’s decision upset some who placed wagers on the contest, but he showed no remorse regarding his actions while speaking with Ryan Novozinsky of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com this week.
“I don’t really pay attention to a lot of social media and stuff,” Singletary said about fan reactions to his team-first move. “But from my friends and my teammates, I heard it. Right after the game, I think it was (Giants guard Greg Van Roten) said, ‘Motor, you know you f—-ed up the over, right? Oh, they’re going to be mad at you.'”
Specifically, Van Roten was referencing how ESPN Bet and other sportsbooks listed the game’s over/under betting total at 37.5. Singletary declining to sprint into the end zone on the final meaningful play of the game kept the score at 21-15, meaning the under rather than the over hit.
“Comes with it though,” Singletary continued during his comments. “For the guys that’s gambling, you’re taking the risk. You’re taking a risk every time you do it.”
Singletary isn’t wrong but may want to be careful about calling gamblers out. This past January, Giants backup quarterback Tommy DeVito opened up about receiving messages from upset fans via social media related to bets placed before and during games.
With that said, Singletary could have opportunities to put smiles on the faces of some bettors when the Giants host a 1-2 Dallas Cowboys team that’s responsible for the NFL’s worst run defense (surrendering 185.7 rushing yards per game) three weeks into the season on Thursday night.
“I’m pretty sure that’s not where they want to be in the first few weeks,” Singletary said about a Dallas side coming off back-to-back losses. “But, as you know, it’s a week-to-week league. Division game, we know it’s going to be a four-quarter battle.”
Singletary seemingly doesn’t care that DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Giants as 5.5-point underdogs for Thursday’s matchup as of Wednesday morning.
