With the Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh era over, the New York Jets need a new regime to take over this offseason.

Plenty of names are being floated for a new coach, but a surprising one is throwing his hat in the ring: former Jets coach Rex Ryan.

“I’m all about the Jets,” Ryan said on ESPN Radio’s Bart and Hahn recently. “And the great thing is, yeah, you get a second chance at it and that doesn’t happen very often. Well, when it does it’s usually special. We’ll find out if I get that chance or not.”

Ryan was not done there, however. While on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast, Ryan again made it known he wants the job.

“I have some unfinished business with that franchise,” Ryan said Friday. “I just think I would get back in it if I could make a difference and I could make a difference with that team.”

Ryan had more success than most other Jets head coaches. From 2009 to 2014, the Jets went 46-50 under Ryan, including back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances in 2009 and 2010.

After his time with the Jets, Ryan spent two lackluster years with their AFC East rival Buffalo Bills as their head coach before leaving coaching to become an analyst for ESPN.

As a head coach candidate in 2024, Ryan is not appealing.

At his best, he was the loud, brash and confident defensive mastermind behind some of the best defenses in the NFL as Jets head coach and before that as Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator.

Toward the end of his time with the Jets and Bills, however, both teams struggled. Ryan has been out of the league since 2016.

That leaves a lot of questions to be answered: How has he adapted to the game? Can he rekindle his defensive magic? What kind of staff could he put together?

There are too many unanswered questions for the Jets to even consider Ryan at such a pivotal point for the franchise.
