EXPLORING TRINIDADIAN HERITAGE AND IDENTITY
Driftwood, a brand new play by celebrated Trinidadian actress Martina Laird, is
coming to Stratford-upon-Avon this month. The story follows a bitter
possession battle for a gentleman’s membership, set in opposition to Trinidad’s battle for political independence within the Fifties. It’s a journey of self-determination, household and belonging.
“This play grew from a deep need to discover inherited patterns, the will for connection and self-determination, and to position Caribbean voices and histories on the centre of the story,” says Laird. The manufacturing will probably be directed by Justin Audibert, Creative Director of the Chichester Pageant, who’s admired for his inclusive and progressive work in theatre. Solid members embody Ellen Thomas, identified for roles in Channel 4’s Academics and EastEnders. She is joined by Cat White, Shane David-Joseph, Ziggy Heath, Martins Imhangbe and Roger Ringrose.
The play comes at a time when conversations round id, belonging, possession, and historic reparations are within the mainstream within the UK and the Caribbean. Individuals of Trinidad descent within the UK have contributed immensely to British tradition and public life, reminiscent of people concerned in Notting Hill Carnival.
The manufacturing will run on the Royal Shakespeare Firm in Stratford-upon-Avon from 17 April – 30 Might, earlier than transferring to the Kiln Theatre in London for a month firstly of June.
