Meta has reported that artificial intelligence (AI) had a modest impact on global elections in 2024, largely due to its enhanced content monitoring systems. Speaking to journalists, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, highlighted the company’s success in combating disinformation, citing its decision to establish election operations centers to monitor content in countries like the US, India, and South Africa. Meta detected and disrupted 20 covert influence operations, primarily originating from Russia, Iran, and China while maintaining strict controls over AI-generated content, including deepfakes. Although AI-driven election misinformation on the company’s platforms was limited, Clegg cautioned against rising disinformation on other platforms like TikTok. Despite Meta’s efforts to refine its content moderation policies, it has faced accusations of censorship and failing to prevent online abuse.
