Forty minutes of regulation was not enough to decide a thrilling battle between No. 4 Texas and No. 10 Notre Dame on Thursday night.
Notre Dame may have dominated the overtime period by outscoring Texas, 12-2, to grab the 80-70 win and snap its two-game losing streak, but the Longhorns made it interesting late to force the extra frame.
This clutch jumper from Texas senior Rori Harmon tied the game at 66 with 7.7 seconds left in regulation.
Harmon also knocked down two free throws with one second left to force overtime with the game tied at 68.
A hot shooting night carried the Fighting Irish throughout the game. While Notre Dame shot 28-for-63 from the field (44.4 percent), it was even better from behind the arc (47.1 percent).
Sophomore Hannah Hidalgo completely took over. After being held to just 16 points (6-for-17) in a 78-67 loss to Utah (7-2), Hidalgo bounced back in a big way with 30 points (11-for-20), eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Seniors Olivia Miles (18 points, six assists) and Sonia Citron (18 points, seven rebounds, seven steals) combined for nearly half of Notre Dame’s points.
Sophomore Madison Booker was the leading scorer for the Longhorns with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Aside from her late-game heroics, Harmon was slowed down with only six points (2-for-9).
While Texas outrebounded Notre Dame, 46-37, the Longhorns could not take advantage after committing 23 turnovers.
The schedule does not get any easier for the Fighting Irish (6-2). Notre Dame goes on the road for an ACC opener against Syracuse (4-5) on Sunday before hosting No. 2 UConn (7-0) on Dec. 12.
Texas (7-1) stays on the road to take on James Madison on Sunday.
