NEW YORK CITY – A construction worker died after falling from an elevated position inside a building in Midtown on Thursday, police said.
The NYPD were called to the scene just before 9:40 a.m. at East 49th Street and Park Avenue.
Police said the construction worker was a 45-year-old man.
The NYC Department of Buildings said it was determined that the fall occurred while the worker was assisting a licensed master electrician install a metal framing system for electrical wiring and equipment in the catwalk area between the ceiling of a ballroom on the third floor and fourth floor of the building.
In the catwalk area, the 45-year-old construction worker was walking on top of the drywall ceiling when he fell 40 feet below, landing inside the third-floor ballroom, the NYC DOB said.
EMS said the construction worker died at the scene.
Police have not released the name of the construction worker at this time.
“Construction safety inspectors are on scene at 301 Park Avenue, and they have issued an immediate Stop Work Order to the project while we start our investigation into today’s tragic fatal worker fall,” the NYC DOB said in a statement.
