The remains of 42 South African freedom fighters, who died while in exile in Zimbabwe and Zambia during the fight against apartheid, have been returned to South Africa. Government officials and families received the remains, which included notable figures like Duma Nokwe, Florence Mophosho, and Basil February, at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria on Wednesday. The initiative is part of a national effort to honor those who died while serving in the underground structures of the African National Congress (ANC) and Pan Africanist Congress. The fighters had left the country to avoid arrest during the apartheid struggle or to receive military training abroad intending to participate in an armed struggle when they returned home. A homecoming ceremony, hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa, is set for Friday, with more remains from countries like Lesotho, Ethiopia, and Russia expected to be repatriated soon.
