The Dallas Stars have rewarded their star goaltender Jake Oettinger, signing him to an eight-year, $66 million contract extension, the team announced Thursday.
The deal also includes $23 million in signing bonuses, per ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski.
Since he entered the NHL, and in comparison to current goalies who have appeared in 50 regular-season games, Oettinger ranks top 10 in goals-against average (2.49) and wins (116). Oettinger is also tied with New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin for the second-most postseason wins (23) over the last three seasons.
“Jake has established himself as one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “His unique blend of poise, size, athleticism, and mental toughness has helped our team reach new heights since he’s taken over the net. He is an integral part of our core that will allow us to contend for the Stanley Cup this season, but also for many years to come. Off the ice, Jake is a leader in our team’s community efforts and is always willing to give his time and resources. I’m pleased that Jake and his wife Kennedi will be part of our family for many years to come.”
The extension is much-deserved for Oettinger, who owns a 116-48-23 record in 196 career games. He has also been a part of three consecutive postseason appearances for the Stars, including the Western Conference Final each of the past two seasons.
The Stars are off to an undefeated start to the 2024-25 season, led by Oettinger’s stout .948 save percentage. Per NHL.com, Oettinger was fourth among goaltenders during the 2023-24 season, posting 38 wins, which was tied for second-most, and his save percentage (.908) was in the top five.
Oettinger is tied with Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck and Utah Hockey Club’s Connor Ingram for the most wins just over a week into the 2024-25 season.
With so much consistency at the goaltender position, it is not hard to see why Oettinger received his massive extension.
