The New Mexico Lobos thought they were turning the corner from last year’s dismal 4-8 record with new head coach Bronco Mendenhall at the helm. It might not be that easy, though.
New Mexico was up 31-14 at the start of the fourth quarter against FCS Montana State in Saturday’s Week 0 matchup when the worst-case scenario unfolded.
Montana State scored three straight touchdowns without New Mexico having any answer for their offensive explosion.
It didn’t help that the winds in Albuquerque picked up considerably as the fourth quarter got underway, blowing a New Mexico field-goal attempt wide with nine minutes remaining that could have potentially staved off Montana State’s developing comeback.
