The cancellation of Carnival Sunday’s J’Ouvert at Notting Hill led many to think that organiser NHCL had scuppered a once-a-year chance to cover yourself in oil, paint, powder, mud and whatever else.
Let’s be clear: you can still get gloriously messy to pumping soca music if you register with a dutty mas band. Please note, dutty mas is the approved term, because ‘J’Ouvert’ is reserved strictly for the centuries-old early-morning opening of the carnival festivities. If you’re still throwing powder when the sun’s high in the sky, it isn’t J’Ouvert!
