The Tour Championship, the last event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, tees off Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
Although the event offers the most prize money on the PGA Tour, the tournament’s unique format irritates some golfers, who can ruin a good season with one lousy week playing in it. Additionally, casual fans tend to tune out the event because it’s held a month after the British Open, the season’s final major.
Only 30 players, starting at staggered scores, can raise the FedEx Cup and win the $25M bonus after Sunday’s Tour Championship final round.
Players’ starting scores are based on their FedEx Cup standings, determined by points earned from tournament finishes throughout the season. Per the PGA Tour, strong finishes in The Players Championship, majors, and Signature Events are valued more highly.
