With the 15th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select … wide receiver Xavier Worthy?
Obviously, that didn’t happen. The Colts selected UCLA defensive end Laiatu Latu, but behind the scenes, perhaps they weren’t entirely committed to their pick. Or at least that’s the case if what Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy claims is true.
During a recent appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show,” Worthy said that the Colts called him while they were on the clock and then abruptly hung up before calling Latu’s name.
“Draft day was crazy. I had got a call at 15, 16, I think it was the Colts — hung up the phone in my face. It was a little crazy,” Worthy said. “The Colts called my phone on draft day and hung up the phone. They said, ‘Hello, this is so and so with the Colts.’ And then they stopped talking and hung up.”
A baffled Eisen asked Worthy if he was certain the call hadn’t accidentally been disconnected.
“I’m positive,” Worthy said.
After that, Worthy says things quieted down until pick No. 28 when he thought the Buffalo Bills were calling. However, it turned out to be the Chiefs, who had just moved up in order to select the speedy Texas star.
For Worthy, it was a blessing. He always desired to play in Kansas City and is thankful the Colts, for whatever reason, decided to hang up on him.
“That’s where I wanted to be,” he said.
Everything worked out in Worthy’s favor. He gets to suit up for the unbeaten Chiefs, who are currently Super Bowl favorites. The Colts, meanwhile, are 4-4 and fighting for their playoff lives.
