Official events start with the UK National Steelbands Panorama at Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance on Saturday 24 August. Just five bands are competing this year.
J’Ouvert would have started at 6am if it hadn’t been cancelled on Sunday 25th, Children’s Carnival follows – we’ll see how well it lives up to the name. The Horniman’s Pleasance stage is dedicated to Red Bull Selector, which allows the crowd to vote for the tracks to be played. It’s described as a non-ticketed “shared musical journey between the carnival crowd and the DJ. A soundtrack selected by the people, for the people.”
For Carnival Day (Monday 26 August) control of the Horniman’s Pleasance stage passes to Strawberries & Creem for its first public event in London for five years with line-up of (undisclosed) special guests. Meanwhile, on the road, where the real action takes place, the Bank Holiday weekend reaches its frenetic bacchanalian climax.
Both days will include, at 3pm, a 72-second silence in memory of the 72 victims of the Grenfell Tower fire on 14 June 2017. After seven years, the fight for justice continues and seems no nearer resolution.
