The employees author and historian Jill Lepore is an admirer of the Federal Writers’ Mission, and the man-on-the-street type of documentary it helped to pioneer. One of these journalism, she thinks, is integral to the democratic venture. As a part of a particular episode of The New Yorker Radio Hour, Lepore collaborated with the audio-storytelling group Transom to create a brand new documentary on how Individuals understand their nation on the eve of its two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary. Producers carried out interviews in Illinois, California, Louisiana, Vermont, and Utah, in fuel stations, metropolis parks, and malls, on avenue corners and dairy farms, asking folks how they see themselves within the American story, how they really feel about America at 200 and fifty, and what they think about the tricentennial of independence will probably be like.
The New Yorker Radio Hour’s collaboration with Transom was produced by Sophie Crane. It was recorded by Eve Abrams, Scott Service, Erica Heilman, Yohance Lacour, and David Weinberg.
