Antigua and Barbuda MP Asot Michael was discovered dead at his residence early on Tuesday, suffering from a chest stab wound and other wounds.

According to a statement from his family, Michael was killed in “a brutal and senseless act of violence” at his residence in the Dry Hill neighbourhood of St. John Parish on the west end of the island.

In a statement, Browne said, “I regarded him as a brother despite our differences.” He added, “I pledge that our government will provide all necessary resources to the Royal Police Force to ensure a thorough investigation.”

According to the Office of the Prime Minister Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst, the administration has decided that a member of parliament should be honoured with an official funeral.

Before he left the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, Michael had been Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s Minister of Tourism, Economic Development, and Energy.

In the 2023 election, Michael, an independent MP, had just been elected to his fifth consecutive term. He was Antigua’s first successful independent candidate.

With the death of Michael, a by-election for the St Peter constituency will need to be held within 120 days.

In an update, a 26-year-old Golden Grove resident has been charged with murder.

Late Friday night, Alexta Francis, a Golden Glove resident, was arrested. He reportedly admitted to the murder and gave the police essential pieces of evidence.
