The U.S. Park Police stated it responded to the Mall about 11:30 a.m. Thursday to a tracing of the numbers “8647” on the grass of the west garden, massive sufficient to be photographed from the highest of the Washington Monument.
Photographs on Getty Pictures, taken by a Reuters photographer and video from an EarthCam digicam stationed atop the Washington Monument confirmed the numbers Thursday. A transparent “8” and “7”, alongside a fainter “6” and a barely seen “4,” might be seen within the grass. The numbers seem as brown spots within the garden, contrasting with the inexperienced grass round them.

Reuters was first to report the markings on the Nationwide Mall.

“The reason for the discoloration has not but been decided,” Park Police stated in a press release. “Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing.”
