It was a sad day for supporters of the Black Stars of Ghana as their team failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations that will be hosted in Morocco next year (2025).
Ghana came into the game on match day 5 in a must-win match against Angola at the Estadio de on Thursday, November 15, 2024. This is the first time in 20 years that the West African giants will fail to book qualification for the biannual tournament.
The Ghanaians started the game like a house on fire full of confidence when Jodan Ayew gave them the lead with a powerful strike into the top-left corner. Angola got a lifeline back into the game when Zito Luvumbo was brought down in the box by Gideon Mensah.
However, Ghana’s goalkeeper, Manaf Nurudeen, stood up to the occasion with a superb save to deny the equalizer and maintain the lead. The Black Stars were able to keep Angola at bay as the first half ended 1-0.
Angola came back into the game 64th minute as Luvumbo connected with a fantastic header to beat goalkeeper Nurudeen and take the game level with the game ending 1-1. The Black Stars remain third on the group table with three points while Angola top the group with 12 points.
What is next for Ghana?
The Black Stars will now shift attention to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where the Black Stars will need to get back on their feet and put the disappointment of AFCON behind them.
The victory put Angola top of the group with a game to spare ahead of their match day 6 fixture.
