Weather is a problem in Kansas City. That’s bad news for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs couldn’t leave the airport Saturday afternoon because of icy conditions.
Kansas City International Airport posted on social media, “Due to rapid ice accumulation, the airfield at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is currently closed to flight operations.“
According to the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs were to board United Airlines and couldn’t leave on time at 2 p.m. CST and arrive in Denver at 2:45 p.m. MT.
Winter Storm Blair is causing headaches for many travelers in the Midwest. The Chiefs are finding that out.
The Chiefs tried to leave early Saturday just before the storm arrived but couldn’t because of mechanical issues, according to the Kansas City Star.
The Chiefs and Broncos are expected to kick off at 4:25 p.m. EST in Denver.
It is unclear what would happen if the Chiefs can’t leave in time, but the report said there has never been a forfeit in NFL history. Some games were rescheduled to allow the game to be completed, like in 2020, because of Covid-19.
There was also when the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the field. The Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game was canceled in Week 17 of the 2022 NFL season.
The game is important for the Broncos (9-7) because a win puts them in the playoffs. A loss means they would need the Bengals and the Miami Dolphins to lose in order to get into the NFL playoffs as the No. 7 seed.
The Chiefs (15-1) already wrapped up home-field advantage and plan to sit their starters, including star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
