The ruling Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros (CRC) party, led by President Azali Assoumani, has secured 28 out of 33 parliamentary seats, retaining its majority in Comoros. The results, announced by the electoral commission, await Supreme Court confirmation. The election, held on Sunday, was boycotted by some opposition parties that had previously accused Assoumani’s party of electoral fraud. Assoumani, a former military officer, first seized power in 1999 through a coup. However, he stepped down in 2006 after only one term in office. Assoumani returned to the country’s political scene in 2016 after winning that year’s presidential elections. He has been president since, with constitutional changes in 2018 allowing him to bypass term limits and a previous political arrangement that rotates the presidency among the country’s three islands. This election victory strengthens his grip on power amid ongoing political tensions.
