Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott won’t play again this season due to a serious hamstring injury and, thus, won’t be able to help head coach Mike McCarthy potentially hold onto his job through at least next year.

Prescott recently spoke with both
Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports and Garrett Podell of CBS Sports about McCarthy’s uncertain future.

“I believe in him wholeheartedly,” Prescott told Epstein. “I don’t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance — another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. ‘On his terms’ may be a good way to say it. But I wholeheartedly believe in him.”

The Cowboys went 12-5 each season from 2021-2023 under McCarthy, but he guided the club to only a single playoff victory over that time. Dallas then lost seven of its first 10 games of the ongoing campaign before it improved to 5-7.

Many members of the NFL community have assumed since last winter that Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones would eventually replace McCarthy with living legend Bill Belichick. While Jones has interestingly given McCarthy some public votes of confidence since late November, there’s no sign the two parties are close to putting pen to paper on a contract extension or a new deal.

“…The injury bug has hit us large in part,” Prescott told Podell. “… I’m going to push and be in the corner and pushing for Mike to get a second contract…and just the opportunity to do things more with a healthy team. I’m all for it. It’s been tough, and [I] feel helpless in the sense of not being able to help him in a year knowing how big this is, being able to get out there to play well to get victories and even in the games that we played, not being able to play as well or get victories, was very frustrating.”

It was reported back last January that the Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles “expressed interest in Belichick, that Belichick didn’t reciprocate, and that those teams then decided to stick with their current coaches.” Some have speculated this fall that Belichick could choose the Jacksonville Jaguars over Dallas in January 2025 assuming Jaguars owner Shad Khan moves on from Doug Pederson following Week 18.

For now, each game the Cowboys play through the end of the season will essentially serve as a job interview for McCarthy regarding his future with the organization. As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Dallas as a 5.5-point underdog for the upcoming “Monday Night Football” home game against the 4-8 Cincinnati Bengals.
