New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams realizes his reunion with quarterback Aaron Rodgers will probably be short-lived.
The Jets (3-10) were eliminated from the playoffs in a 32-26 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 14. Considering it’s failed to meet expectations this season, New York may end the Rodgers experiment soon.
“I mean, it’ll be a sad thing for sure, but hopefully that’s not the case,” Adams said of Rodgers’ potential departure Tuesday on “Up & Adams.” “That’s why we got to make the most of the ones we have here…We had a decent showing last game, and I do say decent because it’s not up to our standard of greatness, but it was definitely a step in the right direction.”
Against Miami, Rodgers completed 27 of 39 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown. Adams, meanwhile, logged nine receptions for 109 yards and one touchdown. However, those performances could be outliers.
Through his first 13 starts, Rodgers, 41, has completed a subpar 63.1% of his passes for 2,966 yards and 20 TDs and has tossed eight interceptions.
Since the Las Vegas Raiders dealt Adams to the Jets on Oct. 15, he has 40 receptions for 453 yards and three TD catches in seven games with the club. He has failed to surpass 100 receiving yards in six of his seven games in New York.
If the Jets release Rodgers with a post-June 1 designation, they would incur $14M in dead cap in 2025 and $35M in 2026, per Spotrac. Despite the cap charges, expect New York to cut the QB. SNY’s Connor Hughes recently reported the Jets “prefer to move on from Rodgers.”
Adams’ future with the Jets is also uncertain. The 31-year-old will have the team’s highest cap hit ($38.3M) in 2025. If he refuses to restructure his contract, bank on him playing elsewhere.
When the Jets reunited the former Green Bay Packers tandem, they thought it would make them a Super Bowl contender. Instead, it has been a letdown.
