The Dolphins’ odds of making the playoffs just got longer.
On Saturday, the team downgraded quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (hip) to doubtful for Week 17’s game against the Browns (3-12).
Per NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe, Miami “elevated third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson to [the] active roster — a sign that Tua Tagovailoa won’t be available” on Sunday.
“[Tyler] Huntley would be in line to start,” Wolfe added.
The Dolphins (7-8) have gone 6-5 in Tagovailoa’s 11 2024 starts. The fifth-year quarterback leads the league in completion percentage (72.9 percent) while throwing for 2,867 yards (7.2 yards per attempt), 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Dolphins have averaged 24.1 points in the 11 games Tagovailoa started.
The Dolphins have struggled mightily without Tagovailoa. He missed four games earlier this season due to a concussion, and Miami averaged 10 points per game while going 1-3. Huntley started three times and was 39-of-66 (59.1 percent) for 377 yards (5.7 yards per attempt), one touchdown and one interception.
Miami must win its remaining two games (at Browns, at Jets) and receive help to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Per The New York Times playoff predictor, the Dolphins have an 8 percent chance of reaching the postseason but will be eliminated with a loss.
The Browns haven’t been good this season, but they’re getting a significant break by likely playing the Dolphins without Tagovailoa. Cleveland ranks 26th in scoring defense (25.3 points allowed per game) and has only held two of its first 15 opponents under 20 points (Jaguars, Steelers).
The Dolphins could be eliminated from postseason contention before they kick off their Week 17 game in Cleveland. Miami needs the Chargers (9-6) or Broncos (9-6) to lose their remaining two games, and both play on Saturday. If Los Angeles beats New England (3-12) and Denver downs Cincinnati (7-8), Miami’s path to the playoffs will close.
With Tagovailoa likely out of Sunday’s game, the Dolphins’ hope of making the postseason might have already shuttered.
