The race to succeed Akinwumi Adesina as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 2025 has intensified, with eight candidates vying for the position. Adesina, who has led the bank since 2015 and was re-elected in 2020, will complete his tenure in May 2025. Key contenders include Abbas Mahamat Tolli of Chad, Rabah Arezki of Algeria, Amadou Hott of Senegal, and Samuel Munzele Maimbo of Zambia. The other candidates are Albert Zeufack of Cameroon, Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala of South Africa, Romuald Wadagni of Benin, and Ousmane Kane of Mauritania. Each candidate has garnered backing from influential regional blocs and their national governments, reflecting the bank’s complex voting dynamics. The election, set for May 29, 2025, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, will determine the future of the 82-member institution tasked with driving sustainable development across Africa.
