Man United head coach Erik Ten Hag has revealed the player he opposed selling in the June 2024 transfer window.
Erik ten Hag has once again expressed clear frustration over Scott McTominay’s departure from Man United to Napoli indicating that this was a player he didn’t want to sell.
Rising from United’s youth academy, the Scottish international’s move to Napoli earned Man United a sum of € 30.5 million plus a 10% sell-on clause that was included in his contract. This move was considered to have been very profitable to the club because he came from the youth team.
The midfielder seems to be making a name for himself in the Serie A already, as he has scored two goals and made one assist for Napoli, and when asked about this, United’s head coach, Ten Hag revealed that he was never in support of letting McTominay go.
On Friday, Ten Hag had told reporters: “I’m very happy for Scott. As I said, when he left, I didn’t want this but that’s the rules the club had to deal with. The rules are, I would even say, bad, but that’s the situation created. It forced us to make this decision.”
McTominay spent over two decades at United, joining at just five years old and making his senior debut in 2017 under José Mourinho. Known for his energy, versatility, and commitment, the Scottish midfielder became a reliable option for several managers, including Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erik ten Hag.
McTominay made 255 appearances for the club, scoring 29 goals, with ten coming during his last season.
