The Florida Gators were wrestled into submission deep in the heart of Texas on Saturday afternoon.
No. 5 Texas was blanking Florida 42-0 for two-and-a-half quarters, threatening to extend one streak and break another for the Gators.
Saturday was only the fourth time the two programs have met on the gridiron and just the first since 1940. Texas had never lost in the all-time series, and the 49-17 demolition by the Longhorns kept it that way.
But before Saturday, Florida had only scored one touchdown against Texas, and that was part of a 7-7 tie in 1924 — just over a century ago.
The 17 points posted by Florida’s offense were enough to avoid an embarrassing continuation of that 100-year streak.
It also extended the Gators’ shutout-less streak that spans back to the 1988 season, per the ABC broadcast.
That’s 457 consecutive games scoring at least one point. Had they been held scoreless, TCU would’ve taken over the No. 1 spot with 402 consecutive games, per 247Sports’ Jamie Plunkett.
The effort to save face pales in comparison to the beatdown the team took on national television, just two days after the school’s athletic director announced head coach Billy Napier would be returning in 2025 despite calls to fire him.
With the loss, Florida dropped to 4-5 on the season and now has just three more opportunities to reach six wins and avoid missing a bowl game.
