According to a United Nations report, an average of 140 women and girls were killed daily by intimate partners or family members in 2023, making the home the deadliest place for women. The UNODC report, released on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, found that 60% of the 85,000 women and girls killed globally were victims of such violence. Africa recorded the highest toll, with 21,700 deaths and 2.9 victims per 100,000 population, followed by the Americas and Oceania with 1.6 victims and 1.5 victims respectively. Asia and Europe reported lower rates with 0.8 victims and 0.6 victims respectively. The report highlights a stark gender disparity in homicides, finding that 80% of homicide victims were men. However, women were disproportionately affected in domestic settings with only 11.8% of men dying at the hands of an intimate partner or family member.
