The iconic Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos was electrified on Wednesday night as Nigerian music heavyweights, including Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage, delivered unforgettable performances at the Greater Lagos Countdown to usher in the New Year.

The event, organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, brought together music lovers from across the state for a night of electrifying entertainment and unity. With a star-studded lineup, the countdown featured performances by top artists such as Niniola, Olamide, Adewale Ayuba, Runtown, BNXN, 9ice, Seyi Vibez, and more.

Wizkid, renowned for his captivating stage presence, had the crowd singing along to his chart-topping hits. The music star also showcased his spiritual side, praying for his fans in the Yoruba language as they commenced 2025. Additionally, Wizkid sparked speculation about his plans for the new year, stating that he was “back in Nigeria.” While details remain unclear, fans are eagerly awaiting Wizkid’s next move.

Burna Boy’s high-energy performance left fans in awe, but was briefly disrupted when an overzealous fan breached security and reached the artist, prompting the security team to intervene. The incident occurred during Burna Boy’s performance, and the singer walked off the stage after the fan was escorted away. However, the show continued, and Burna Boy later returned to the stage to complete his set.

Tiwa Savage, the Queen of Afrobeats, delivered an energetic and soulful set, showcasing her vocal prowess. Niniola‘s emotive and powerful performance captivated the audience, while Fuji maestro Adewale Ayuba thrilled fans with nostalgic renditions of classics like Ejo and Ijo Fuji. 9ice also took fans down memory lane with his signature Alapomeji vibes.

Comedian Gbenga Adeyinka delighted the crowd with his humor and even taught Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu the trending ‘Oblee‘ dance moves. In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude to Lagos residents for their resilience throughout 2024.

“This outgoing year was one of tremendous opportunities for the young. You’ve shown true resilience that makes you true Lagosians. Together, we can succeed,” he said. The governor added, “2025 will be a better year for all of us. To my people in Ajeromi, Ajegunle, Victoria Island, Ajah, Ibeji-Lekki, Ojokoro, Oworoshoki, we will see you bigger and better in 2025.”

The Greater Lagos Countdown 2025 was celebrated simultaneously across the five divisions of the state, ensuring a memorable start to the New Year for all Lagosians. The event was proof of the city’s vibrant entertainment scene and its ability to bring people together in celebration.

Notably, the event featured a lineup of 20 artists, including some of Nigeria’s biggest stars. The performances were a mix of established and emerging artists, showcasing the diversity and talent of the Nigerian music industry.

The Greater Lagos Countdown 2025 was a resounding success, with attendees praising the organization, performances, and overall atmosphere of the event.
