The Tulane Green Wave continue to lose players to the transfer portal.

Tulane RB Makhi Hughes, one of the most productive ball carriers in the country, entered the transfer portal on Friday, per ESPN’s Max Olson.

Hughes’ announcement comes a few weeks after former Tulane QB Darian Mensah signed with Duke. After making their third consecutive trip to the AAC title game, the Green Wave have now lost 12 scholarship players to the portal this month.

Hughes made his presence known in his two seasons at Tulane. In 2023, the redshirt sophomore rushed for 1,378 yards and seven touchdowns while eclipsing 100 rush yards seven times throughout the season.

The 2024 season was much of the same for Hughes with 1,401 rush yards, 17 touchdowns (two receiving) and seven games with at least 100 yards on the ground. According to Sports-Reference, Hughes ranks 10th in the country in rush yards this season.

Hughes’ success during both of his seasons at Tulane earned him back-to-back first-team All-AAC honors.

While Hughes may not be as well known as some of the players above him on the rush-yards list, he was a huge part of the Green Wave’s success the last two seasons.

Wherever he decides to take his talents to next, expect Hughes to become more of a household name, as the talented RB still has two more seasons of eligibility remaining.
