My mom came visiting on a ship from Greece on the lookout for the American dream. She was very, very younger when she got here right here [and] they instructed her the streets could be paved in gold … she discovered they weren’t when she bought right here.

She was married to my father — sadly, he turned out to be a deadbeat dad. By the point I used to be round 5 years previous, my mom had some medical challenges. So, for about 5 years, my brother and I have been in foster care in East LA. However we have been a number of the fortunate ones as a result of we bought to see our mother on the weekend.

Sadly, others within the foster residence weren’t in the identical state of affairs. Nobody ever visited them. My mother was so large[-hearted] that she would invite any child who wished to return with us on the vacations to return on over. We had an awesome mother. She would all the time inform my brother and I, “It doesn’t matter what, you are able to do it, boys” … And, by gosh, we positive did.

We had no cash, no cash in any respect. However we didn’t realize it. We didn’t have a tv set, we didn’t have newspapers to learn. [But] we thought we had the whole lot. And my mother was the best mother. We went again residence about after I was 9 and a half years previous.

She lastly purchased a bit of teeny home for us to stay in. And, one weekend on a Friday, mother stated, “Let’s put all of our cash collectively. I’m gonna present you one thing.” We had 27 cents. I’ll always remember that. Between all of us collectively, we had 27 cents. And mother stated to us, “Boys, what’s wealthy? We’re very wealthy as a result of we’re completely satisfied and we’re all wholesome. We now have 27 cents. However in our little teeny backyard, we now have greens rising. We now have water. Our payments are paid updated, and we now have issues. We’re gonna make it by means of the week and into subsequent week.”
