Rumors claiming that New York Giants co-owner John Mara could fire general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll either before or after the ongoing season concludes hovered over the organization long before it took the league’s worst overall record (2-13) into Christmas.
However, on the latest episode of the “Scoop City” podcast, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini suggested that Mara does not necessarily consider the two a package deal.
“I think there is a world where maybe one goes and one stays,” Russini said about Schoen and Daboll, as Ryan Bologna of ClutchPoints and Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report shared. “I’ve talked to people around the league who believe that Joe Schoen is going to be safe. That he has a good relationship with ownership.”
Schoen joined the Giants in January 2022, and he subsequently chose Daboll. Together, they helped the club earn a playoff berth and a road postseason win in their first campaign with the organization but have since been responsible for a pair of losing seasons. Most recently, the Giants set a franchise record with their 10th straight loss, and they’ve endured three double-digit defeats since they decided to move on from quarterback Daniel Jones last month.
Most reporters assume the Giants would use the first pick of the 2025 draft to acquire either Miami Hurricanes signal-caller Cam Ward or Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback Shedeur Sanders. On paper, Mara has little reason to believe the Schoen and Daboll team will make such an important decision right.
Perhaps only one of them will have a say in how the Giants address their quarterback need.
“I think the bottom line here, looking at the situation in New York, do not think or believe that they are together,” Russini added. “They are not a duo. It is not looked at that way.”
The Giants looked largely like a checked-out team in their 34-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons this past Sunday. If his players show little fight in this Sunday’s home finale against the 7-8 Indianapolis Colts, Daboll could be fired as soon as next week.
