The officiating crew in Saturday night’s game between Georgia and Texas made a stunning decision to reverse a crucial call, and Kirby Smart is concerned about the precedent that may have been set.
Georgia was leading 23-8 late in the third quarter at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, when Longhorns cornerback Jahdae Barron intercepted a pass from Carson Beck and returned it all the way to the Bulldogs’ 9-yard line. Barron was initially flagged for pass interference, so Georgia was awarded a first down instead.
Texas fans were furious with the call and began throwing water bottles, beer cans and other trash onto the field. In an unexpected turn of events, the officiating crew then reversed the non-reviewable call and awarded the Longhorns possession. You can watch the whole sequence here.
After his team’s 30-15 win, Smart issued a warning about the way things transpired on the pass interference play.
“Now we’ve set a precedent if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes, you have a chance to get the call reversed. That’s dangerous,” Smart said.
