The Washington Nationals will have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 Major League Baseball draft after winning the draft lottery on Tuesday night.
The Nationals entered the day with a 10.8% chance of winning the top pick, the fourth best odds of any team in the lottery.
It will be the third time they have selected No. 1 overall, and they hit massive home runs with their first two top picks with Stephen Strasburg in 2009 and Bryce Harper in 2010.
Ethan Holliday, the brother of 2022 No. 1 overall pick Jackson Holliday, is expected to be the top pick in this year’s class.
Whether it is Holliday or another prospect, the Nationals have a chance to land another potential franchise cornerstone to a young, emerging roster that seems to have brighter days ahead of it.
Here are the rest of Tuesday’s lottery results:
1. Washington Nationals; 2. Los Angeles Angels; 3. Seattle Mariners; 4. Colorado Rockies; 5. St. Louis Cardinals; 6. Pittsburgh Pirates; 7. Miami Marlins; 8. Toronto Blue Jays; 9. Cincinnati Reds; 10. Chicago White Sox; 11. Athletics; 12. Texas Rangers; 13. San Francisco Giants; 14. Tampa Bay Rays; 15. Boston Red Sox; 16. Minnesota Twins; 17. Chicago Cubs; 18. Arizona Diamondbacks.
The biggest losers here are clearly the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins.
Both teams entered the day tied with the highest odds for the top pick (22.5%) and dropped down to No. 4 and No. 7, respectively. That is brutal luck for two teams that had truly dreadful 2024 seasons.
Along with the Nationals, the St. Louis Cardinals were also massive winners, going from the No. 13 pick all the way up the No. 5 overall pick.
The 2025 MLB Draft will take place July 13-15.
