Morocco’s Moldiag has become the first African company to produce mpox test kits, a step toward reducing the continent’s dependence on imported medical supplies. Following the World Health Organization’s declaration of mpox as a global emergency in August, Moldiag developed $5 tests, approved by the Africa CDC, and started distributing them to countries like Uganda, Congo, and Senegal. This initiative addresses critical gaps in testing infrastructure, particularly in remote areas where diagnostic resources are limited. With the help of Africa CDC, Moldiag expedited regional approvals and circumvented delays that occur from WHO processes, known to obstruct Africa’s access to medical supplies. Moldiag’s efforts align with Africa’s post-COVID-19 resolution to localize medical production, fostering tailored solutions for public health emergencies. With a focus on affordability and accessibility, the initiative showcases the growing importance of regional manufacturing in improving Africa’s health disparities and strengthening its resilience against future outbreaks.
