Newcastle United have released an update on the availability of Sandro Tonali, who was suspended for the past ten months after he was found guilty of breaching betting rules.

Sandro Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55m and his ban came after he had played 12 games for the Magpies. However, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) sanctioned the 24-year-old in October 2023 for breaching the rule that prohibits players from placing bets on football events organised by itself, Uefa and Fifa during his time in Italy.

In the latest update, Newcastle received an update from Federazione Italiana Guioco Calico confirming that Sandro Tonali’s ban will end on August 27, 2024. His first game back could be in the Carabao Cup against Nottingham Forest depending on when it is played during the week of his return.

The statement read thus,

“The club has received formal confirmation from the Federazione Italiana Guioco Calico (FIGC) that the player’s sporting sanction will run up to and including Tuesday, 27th August.”

In May 2024, Tonali was given a suspended two-month ban after admitting to breaches of Football Association betting rules. He will not have to serve the ban if he does not commit any further breaches before the end of this season.

The return of Tonali will be a big addition to the Magpies as they will be looking to replicate their impressive from two seasons ago when they qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
