Despite Chapo winning 65% of the vote, international observers reported irregularities, fueling Mondlane’s defiance and calls for electoral justice. The unrest has destabilized Mozambique, damaging over 500 businesses, costing 12,000 jobs, and forcing thousands to flee to neighboring countries. While Chapo urges unity and dialogue, Mondlane remains determined to challenge Frelimo’s 49-year rule and has threatened to install himself as president on January 15, Mozambique’s presidential inauguration day.
